Suraj theatre was built as one of the most opulent theatre`s in the 1980`s in Panchkula. Based on brutalist architecture and with no abutting built forms, the building is conspicuous and imposing. Its strategic location – at the entrance of Panchkula city further adds to its significance.
The embodied building is an amalgamation of strong geometric forms. Circular voids and extended glazing in the front adds an additional dimension to it .
In interiors, natural light washes walls of the marble cladded lobby. Also the bright colour palette, the chandeliers and rich textures in wood and brass reflect the grandeur of the place. The theatre is built in split levels accommodating an upper stall and a luxurious balcony. The theatre has a state of the art acoustics with high acoustic treatment flowing throughout. Its dolby digital sound and 70mm screen keeps it at par with the current standards of cinema. Inspite of the current trend of multiplexes, Suraj theatre is still making business mostly from students and working class.
